The beginnings of Yohji Yamamoto

After studying law at the university of Teio (Tokyo) in 1966, a twenty-three-year old Yohji Yamamoto decides to take a new direction in his life and focuses on helping his dressmaker mother. His new task awakened in him the irrepressible passion for fashion. Three years later, he enrolled in the prestigious Bunka Fashion College, which other renowned designers and stylists such as Takada, Takeo Kikuchi, Jun Takahashi o NIGO have passed through.

In 1972, Yamamoto launched his first fashion line for women. When in 1982 his eponymous brand debuted in Paris, the fashion universe set its eyes on one of the most representative figures of the Japanese haute couture. Over the years, the designer has never abandoned his critycal vision of fashion, something that is refelected in its designs: minimalists, loose fitting, with unisex cuts that avoid objectifying and enhancing the body.

The inspiration behind Y-3 for adidas

After his first 20 years as a designer established in Paris, Yohji Yamamoto began to wonder why his designs were not frequently seen on the streets and were always reduced to a very specific context, far from everyday life. At that time, the designer was fascinated by the magnitude that the sneaker phenomenon acquired from the United States, so he thought it would be interesting to venture into the sneaker culture niche to bring his work to a new audience.

In 2001, Yohji Yamamoto partnered with adidas to introduce the first Y-3 sports capsule. It would be the first of many, becoming a complete line that is present in streetwear season after season. In this new binomial, Yamamoto enjoys total freedom that guarantees that each design continues to maintain the essence of the creative.

The sneakers in the Y-3 collection are characterized by an extravagant design, with eye-catching volume sets that reinterpret some of the most iconic silhouettes from the archives of the German brand. As with the Y-3 clothing, the most popular colors on the sneakers are white and black , resulting in a sober, elegant and without fanfare proposal.
